Google discloses carbon footprint

Google recently disclosed its carbon footprint for the year 2010. The report outlines how the company has offset its carbon emissions through a mix of energy efficiency, renewable energy and alternative means of transportation. The Indian Youth Climate Network's ecoaudit program has also been created to help organisations reduce their impact by adopting sustainability practices with in the organisation.  Click here to know more about our eco audit program.

In the case of Google, almost one-third of the company's electricity comes from renewable sources – a figure that is continuing to rise. The company offsets the emissions generated by the remainder of its electricity supply, along with those from its offices and transport.

Restoring our degraded land

Our land is the foundation of our ecological system, yet it is often forgotten. In India, like many other countries and cultures across the world, we see our land as our mother who nurtures us and is the main source of our sustenance.

The anthropocentric industrial way of development has resulted in extraction and exploitation of the land for human gains which has severely damaged our land.Overgrazing and irresponsible agriculture has led to major losses in soil fertility and ecosystem functionality. World over, around 1.5 billion people currently are affected by land degradation.

During the Rio Summit of 1992 major decisions were made to restore the fragile ecology of the planet. One of the main conventions launched was UNCCCD which obliges the global community to take collective action on the challenges of desertification.

The majority of both governments and civil society have been in the doldrums about this issue. At the same time, in some corners of the world, there have been some amazing stories of hope.
