Waste Management Project
The Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN) started a WASTE MANAGEMENT PROJECT in order to contribute towards solving the major challenge of inefficient management of solid waste in Delhi.
IYCN, in association with “Srishti” and UN-Habitat launched the project at Kali Bari Mandir, Chittaranjan Park, New Delhi with the help of the setup of Excel’s OWC (Organic Waste Compost) machine. It was inaugurated by Smt. Sushma Swaraj on 2nd October 2011. Through this project, IYCN envisions reducing, recycling and reusing through efficient management of organic waste generated in the city by converting it into compost.
Details of the Project:
This project works on implementation of a waste management system that is aimed at managing the organic and food waste generated by the temple (includes all food, garlands of flowers & leaves) and putting into OWC. Besides this machine, there is a ‘shredder’ (to grind the waste so that it decomposes faster), ‘racks’ to store the processed waste for curing and finally some space for packaging the compost.
RTI Workshop

It is a part of the 'Building Communities through Compost' project that showcases how young people in Delhi are addressing the challenges arising from the huge amounts of waste generated in Delhi and also converting them into new opportunities.
Building communities through compost is a youth-led community based waste management project that is being implemented in CR Park, New Delhi. The project is aimed at converting the organic waste generated in the community into compost thus reducing the amount of waste transported to the landfill leading to reduction of the emission GHGs from both the landfill & the transportation. The compost generated is sold back to the community, thus leading to creation of jobs, increase in income and new revenue models for all the stakeholders involved. Shades of Delhi
As a part of the 10-10-10 activites, IYCN had announced a photography contest. Here are the winning entries and the reasons thereof given by the judge Charles, an experienced journalist.

This picture shows an environmental contrast completely opposite of what one should expect in a metropolitan city like New Delhi. Instead of a concrete jungle it displays nature where should have been a parking spot. Since a shade is a reflection of an image, it also represents an opposite. The picture is thus conveys the point, strikingly.

Waste Management in Delhi
The city of Delhi is growing and correspondingly does the waste produced. The Municipal waste, which is not always properly segregated at source and often ends up as mixed waste in the already overflowing landfills. The easiest and most effective way to address this issue is through composting.
Composting in very simple words is making use of the day to day waste that is produced in your household to create a product called compost. Both composting as a process and compost as a product are organic in nature. By composting you are reducing the space needed for waste disposal and transforming that waste by using it as a fertilizer at various places including your own garden (or a roof top kitchen garden to grow your own vegetables)
